Factors that cause the formation of Red Tides / Algal blooms

Factors that cause the formation of Red Tides / Algal blooms

Red tide is initiated by a combination of :

Natural factors (e.g. light intensity, temperature, salinity, nutrients, trace elements, water flow and motility of algal cells)

Anthropogenic factors (e.g. discharge of organic or nutrient-enriched matters) that encourage the rapid and massive growth of algae.

Factors causing red tides

The above factors may favor the growth and aggregation of an algal species and result in red tide or algal bloom.

The continuation of any algal bloom is dependent on the dynamics of the above factors.
