Hong Kong Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan
Biodiversity matters
Biodiversity is essential as it underpins all life on earth, allows organisms to adapt to environmental changes and perform critical roles within their ecosystems, and ensures nature’s stability and resilience.
Beyond its ecological significance, our city also reaps a wide range of benefits from biodiversity, known as ecosystem services. These benefits range from life’s necessities, such as food and water from our lands and seas, oxygen production and climate regulation from our woodlands, to non-material enrichments, such as improving health and well-being, and providing recreation and education opportunities. Biodiversity is not only fundamental to the health of our planet but also intricately linked to the well-being, prosperity, and quality of life within our city.
Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP)
A BSAP is a strategic instrument for identifying priorities, setting strategies, as well as outlining actions for supporting biodiversity conservation. City-level BSAPs can also assist in translating national and international biodiversity goals, including those of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), into implementable actions at the local level.
The Government formulated a city-level BSAP for Hong Kong in 2016 to step up biodiversity conservation and support sustainable development. By formulating and implementing the BSAP, Hong Kong has all along been contributing to national and global efforts on biodiversity conservation. More information is available here.
