Artificial incubation

Artificial incubation |
Generally speaking, the nesting beach is a perfect incubator to the sea turtle eggs. It minimizes temperature fluctuation, permits gaseous exchange and retains moisture to nourish the eggs. However, there are opportunities that artificial incubation can do a better job.
If it rains continually and heavily, which is not unusual in the summer of Hong Kong, and the nests become water-logged, the developing embryos are likely to die due to poor ventilation. Likewise, if the nests are prone to tidal inundation, deaths of embryos are likely to occur. Under such circumstances, artificial incubation is considered as the last resort to help save the eggs. AFCD is responsible to the artificial incubation and jointly raised the hatchlings with the Ocean Park Hong Kong.
Since 1998, AFCD has released over 630 hatchlings back to the sea.
