Conservation of sea turtles in Hong Kong

Post-mortem studies

Apart from the nesting Green Turtles in Sham Wan, incidental observation and records of stranded individuals show that other sea turtles would also pass by Hong Kong in the summer, particularly in the waters off Sai Kung, Clear Water Bay, Poi Toi and Lamma. Studies on the stranded individuals provide useful information about them; the following are 2 selected cases.

The first record of Loggerhead

While the Loggerhead is known to be present in the South China Sea, it had not been recorded in Hong Kong until the first stranded individual was found in Sai Kung in early 2003. It was a mature female and probably died on its way to the nesting site. The carcass has been badly degraded.

Who is the killer?

Sea turtles and sharks

In late 2003, a dead Green Turtle was found in Sai Kung. It lost the rear part of its body shell including the hind limbs and tail. Unlike the hit of propellers which would leave straight cuts, the damage matches with the attack of sharks. Being the limited predators of adult sea turtles, sharks would usually ambush sea turtles from behind and the damage would be on the rear as a result.
