Bird watching in Hong Kong

Bird watching in Hong Kong is rewarding, no matter where you are. Over 570 different species have been recorded here, which accounts for about 35% of all the species found in China, or 5% of the global number.

There are a number of hotspots which are suitable for beginners or experienced bird watchers to access at any time, for example, Tsim Bei Tsui, Nam Sang Wai, Luk Keng, Tai Po Kau, Shing Mun, Lung Fu Shan, etc.

Hong Kong Wetland Park is also an ideal place for bird watching. The Park located next to the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay Ramsar Site has recorded about 280 species of birds. Visitors can join regular guided tours to learn about knowledge on birds and wetland conservation.

Tips for bird watching:
  • Dress in muted colours;
  • Walk quietly in the countryside. When you see a bird, maintain distance and keep your voice low;
  • Do not disturb bird nests and their natural environment;
  • Do not attempt to catch birds or collect their eggs;
  • When observing nocturnal birds at night, never shine a torch or light directly at them;
  • There is no need to track birds hastily. Relax and enjoy the countryside. Even spotting a few common species will make your day;
  • Beginners could get themselves familiar with the birds in their neighbourhood first. Then you can move onto observing waterbirds in wetlands. When you have mastered the basics, identifying forest birds will not be difficult.
